Today sees the first attempt at plotting a course on a chart.
With the use of two squares and a compass (to measure distances with) and the variables spoken about two logs ago, two points were plotted: starting and arrival. The distance between the two was calculated and, given a certain speed, the E.T.A. - estimated time of arrival - was also obtained.
The first chart was off the Algarve coast, in the region of Portimão to Albufeira. The second was off Peniche with the Berlenga isle as destination.

Ao interceptar mais do que um azimute temos a localização da embarcação.
A marcação é a medida para bombordo ou para estibordo a partir da proa verdadeira até ao objecto.
A linha de posição é o traço mais provavel onde a embarcação se irá encontrar.

50% of the living species are in the oceans. Seeing the apparent peace through a glass, those magestic beasts so streamlined and graceful, contrasts with the ugliness created by man on land. The diversity is really overwhelming. A recomended visit.
The Creoula inspires the sea spirit. This four masted sea vessel all painted in white sets one dreaming of long passes at sea with the wind in sail and the breeze through one's hair.

Norte da agulha
Dado que as embarcações possuem sempre objecto metálicos (ferrosos), as agulhas (bussolas) sofrem influências e apresentam um desvio em relação ao norte magnético. Esta é portanto uma indicação dada por uma agulha.
As cartas de navegação vêm sempre referênciadas ao Norte verdadeiro.
Para se descobrir o Norte verdadeiro numa noite sem nuvens ou nevoeiro, basta procurar a estrela polar (North Star).

Começou ontem a segunda fase no preparamento para a o mar.
Este segundo curso tem como principal acréscimo noções de navegação começando por definir as linhas para determinação da localização de um ponto na esfera terrestre.
Eixo de rotação da terra (que define os polos - norte e sul)
Equador - divide a esfera em hemisfério norte e sul
Meridiano de Greenwich - a partir do qual se medem os outros meridianos
Latitude - ângulo medido entre equador e lugar
Longitude - ângulo medido entre meridiano de Greenwich e lugar

This also marks the first fever worth writing home about - 38º C. Mom's been all worried and I had to go get some medicine late in the evening. You're sleeping uneasily now but the worst seems to have passed.
You're lying tummy down in a crouching position, so you must be pretty uncomfortable. I wish I could make it better.
João got his first hair cut today. Mom saved a few locks as is tradition and the lady barber did the cut for free.

This is also a pretty tough stage. Teething can have adverse effects on kids: fever, diarrhea, grumpiness... With João it has led (at least so far... knock on wood) to an occasional bad disposition and more frequente wakings during the night.
The count is at 6, four top, two bottom. But more are appearing and should soon be out.
Still, he has sense enough to know not to bite his mom while breast feeding.

Não chegasse os primeiros dias internado na maternidade, o João teve ainda que ser operado a uma hérnia quando tinha pouco mais de um mês. Ficou portanto, internado novamente se bem que fosse só por uma noite. A intervenção correu bem e hoje já quase que não se nota.
